Rachel who?

I used to know exactly who I was. If you asked me, I could tell you.

I was a girl who rode her bike EVERYWHERE,
loved the public transportation system and knew all the bus routes.
A girl who loved to listen to the wind as I cruised down the hill from the U.

I was a girl who went out dancing at least once a week with the girls,
stayed up til three in the morning on school nights,
and still managed to pass her classes (somehow).

I was a girl with a biting sense of humor,
who had a clever response for every text received,
a vitriolic rap-battler at every single party.

For a while, I was a girl you could find daily at the gym,
in the bowling alley with half a croissant-style-sandwich,
or studying in the dorms with my best friend, Austin.

I was a girl who loved to go to the mountains,
who shot hoops at the institute by herself everyday,
and wrote melancholy love songs with the five chords that she knew.

I was a million first dates, a jelly-belly consumer, a sugar cookie baker,
a tv-series addict, a football game watcher, a three-job worker,
and I could probably beat you at guitar hero.

And even though I didn't like to admit it, I knew that I didn't know who I was at all.

All of that changed when David died.
All of that changed when I made a choice.
All of that changed when I came unto Christ.

Some of those changes were immediate;
wounds that had long been festering, bandaged and covered with ointment.
Some of that healing I recognized, some of it I didn't.

I became a girl with a weight lifted from her shoulders,
who felt the love of God and felt it penetrate her core.
I became a girl who wanted to share that with the world.

I became a girl who had the courage to make changes,
who continued to fall constantly, but had a desire to do right.
I became a girl who began to see.

I became a girl who studied to learn,
with the number one test scores in all of her classes.
A girl that began to set goals and achieve.

I became a girl who turned out to see others,
whose life began to brighten and find meaning
as I worked to develop a grateful heart.

I became someone who was working for the temple,
that sorrowed for sin, with a desire to serve,
and for this cause I was called to the work.

And even though I didn't see it all, happiness flourished from knowing a small part of who I was.

The blessings multiplied as I served a mission.
Reflecting on it now brings me to tears
as I glimpse the changes that the Lord worked through that service.

I became someone who I never dreamed possible.
And even though I often question if I know myself,
I know who I am now and who I will one day be.

I am a daughter of God.
I know that He loves me
and I want to show my love for Him.

I am a woman of God.
I rejoice in my femininity
and the opportunity to nurture.

I am the wife of a loving husband.
With the promise of eternity
and happiness beyond compare.

I am a covenant maker.
I know that blessings await me
if I faithfully fulfill my promises.

I am a mother with a great responsibility
to care for a child of God
and teach him the ways of the Lord.

I am a sister, a daughter, an aunt, a cousin,
a student, employee, a coworker, a friend.

And even though I do not always see, I know the Lord will guide me to become everything I can.

For I know who I am.

Ellen!

It has been my dream for quite a while now to go to The Ellen Show.

BUT THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER!

Brenden and his friend Scott started a band about 5 months ago. They've been writing music for Scott's personal youtube channel as well as for Devin Graham.

Well, one of those videos was featured on The Ellen Show today! The most exciting episode I've ever seen! You can hear their song, Northwest, being played in the video clips, as Dakota enters the stage, and as he is doing tricks outside the studio!

Woo hoo! This is amazing! Congratulations to Scott & Brendo, Devin Graham, and Dakota!!

General Conference

How many times did you spot dad during conference?

3 closeups in one song?

Nice!

I hope you found the things that you were searching for in conference, too. It has been truly inspiring. My heart is full of gratitude for the opportunity to have taken part in such a monumental conference, when the age required to enlist in full-time missionary service has been lowered. What an incredible blessing! The Lord is moving His work forward rapidly, and the results are so exciting. I'm looking forward to the spill of missionaries going forth to serve!

How lucky we are to live in this day! The last days!

If you haven't found what you're looking for just yet, keep your eyes, ears, and heart peeled during the last session. Prayers, hymns, and talks can be an answer to our prayers, or catalysts to invite the Spirit to teach us those things we desire or the Lord desires us to learn.

Happy watching!

What did you spot during conference?

Mission Monday: Benedito Bentes I.

While I was in my last area, a close family wanted to see where I lived. I told them my address and they were able to see my home on google maps.  They wanted to see their own home, but unfortunately, Maceió didn't have street images yet.

Well guess what... now they do! I discovered this wonderful news as I was trying to get a zip code for a letter. Instead, I found myself in one of my favorite places in the world! Benedito Bentes I.

I was overwhelmed to be seeing those streets.

I looked for Duda's house and then decided to take a walk home. As I walked down the streets I saw  the gypsy fashion, the barbie house, and our grocery store: the pena branca!

I could hardly contain my excitement as I walked down the street to where I lived.

It feels good to be home.

Is there another place that you call home?

Memorial Day Weekendzao

I love the mountains, although our relationship seems to have followed the times and we've been on a no-real-personal-contact basis. Much to my chagrin (and undoubtedly the mountains), my time has been occupied by slightly less enjoyable hikes on the south side of campus.

It seems the mountains, for me, are quite constant. Although I may come and go, they always hold the same peace and splendor each time I visit. I love to be there. Words don't quite describe the breathless sensation that I get each time I witness their incredible beauty that God has created.

Yes, the mountains are good for all sorts of things. Along with its pure awe-factor, comes hiking, fishing, and camping! ...which is quite constant itself.

Along with its normal list of hot dogs, tents, s'mores, and campfires comes something different for me. As most of my camping trips in the past few years have been as a leader with the young women, I generally associate camping with being mistaken as one of them.

So, when I went camping with Brenden's family, it was nice to have things switched up. For my first time, camping came with rifles...

ATVs... music... trailers...

And despite some childish behavior, a general knowledge that I was, in fact, older than seventeen.

Well... except for a sweet lady in the chapel in Evanston. She must have thought I was lost or rebellious...it was sweet of her to invite back to young womens.
I guess some things never change.

Perhaps one day I will thank the mountains for keeping me young.

But tonight I'm going to buy some knitting needles and perfume to distinguish me at camp.
